Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award Laureates (2030 ~ 2021)

Dolly Rebecca Parton
Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award 2025
Dolly Rebecca Parton is celebrated globally as a music icon, but her role as a transformative humanitarian, driven by a deeply personal perspective, is perhaps her most enduring legacy. Her philanthropy is rooted in her own impoverished upbringing in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, instilling a philosophy that success is meaningless unless it is used to uplift others. She embodies a practical, direct, and zero-bureaucracy approach to giving.
Parton's most impactful contribution is Dolly Parton's Imagination Library , which perfectly captures her humanitarian outlook. Founded in 1995, the program mails free, high-quality, age-appropriate books directly to children from birth until they enter school, regardless of family income. This effort was directly inspired by her father's inability to read and write. For Parton, universal literacy is the most crucial foundation for social justice and empowerment, believing that a child who can read has the chance to dream bigger. It has distributed over 200 million books globally, a staggering commitment to making education accessible to all from the earliest age.
Through the Dollywood Foundation, Parton consistently prioritizes the well-being of her native Appalachian region. This commitment to regional responsibility was powerfully demonstrated in the aftermath of the devastating 2016 Smoky Mountain wildfires. She created the My People Fund, which provided $1,000 in monthly direct financial aid to hundreds of families who lost their homes, offering immediate, tangible relief without unnecessary red tape. Her humanitarian scope expanded further in 2020 when she made a significant $1 million donation to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for COVID-19 research. This funding directly supported the development of the Moderna vaccine, underscoring her commitment to science and public health. Parton’s approach is characterized by simplicity, humility, and an immediate, practical response to critical community needs.

George Bagnall
Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award 1966
GEORGE BAGNALL:
Well, Jean Hersholt was a friend of mine, and he's a friend of all mankind. As the former president of the Motion Picture Relief Fund he left footprints that were deep enough to withstand the erosions of time and winds. I am gratified you think I've been able to follow him and I thank you sincerely for this treasured honor. But thank you even more for your continued support of our industry-sponsored welfare agencies. I have to add that I again thank the Academy and the industry with which I have been identified. Thank you very much.
