Henry Dunant Medal

Henry Dunant Medal
The Henry Dunant Medal is the highest distinction of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Established in 1965 to mark the centenary of the Movement’s founding, it is named after the Swiss visionary and Nobel Peace Prize winner Henry Dunant. The medal recognizes individual members for outstanding service and acts of great devotion to the Red Cross cause. To maintain its prestige, the Standing Commission typically awards a maximum of only five medals every two years. Priority is given to acts of international significance, work performed under arduous conditions, or long-term pioneering achievements in the humanitarian field. The medal features a red enamel Geneva cross with a bronze medallion at its center depicting Dunant’s profile. In 2024, the medal was awarded to four recipients: Massimo Barra, Dora Athalyne James, Greg Vickery, and Margareta Wahlström. These individuals were honored for their lifelong dedication to humanitarian principles and their leadership during crises. Presentations usually occur during the plenary session of the Council of Delegates, where the global Red Cross community gathers to honor the courage and commitment of these exceptional humanitarians.
