Jakob Schillinger is a social entrepreneur and academic who received the 2016 Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Award for Giving. He was recognized for his work as a co-founder and country coordinator of OneDollarGlasses, an organization dedicated to providing high-quality, affordable prescription eyewear to people in developing countries.OneDollarGlasses utilizes a specialized, low-cost design consisting of a spring steel frame and prefabricated lenses. The organization trains local residents to function as opticians, enabling them to manufacture the frames for less than one dollar and perform eye tests. This model creates a sustainable "business-in-a-box" that provides livelihoods for local workers while selling glasses for the equivalent of roughly two to three days' wages. Under Schillinger’s leadership, the initiative expanded to countries such as Burkina Faso, Bolivia, and Rwanda.Schillinger is also a Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe honoree for social entrepreneurship. Beyond his humanitarian work, he is an accomplished academic who holds a PhD from Princeton University and has served as a professor of art theory.
