The Abdi İpekçi Peace and Friendship Award was established in 1979 to honor the legacy of prominent Turkish journalist Abdi İpekçi following his tragic assassination. Jointly organized by Turkey’s Milliyet newspaper and a Greek organizing committee, the award ran until 2001 with the core purpose of fostering reconciliation, diplomatic dialogue, and deep-rooted friendship between the peoples of Turkey and Greece.Initiated through a proposal by Greek engineer Andreas Politakis, the award sought to counter regional nationalism by celebrating individuals who built cross-cultural bridges. Granted biennially, it recognized outstanding contributions across diverse fields, including literature, fine arts, journalism, poetry, and short film. By honoring creative and intellectual works that emphasized shared humanity over political hostility, the award aimed to transform bilateral tensions into cooperative peace, actively proving that mutual understanding and harmony between the two neighboring nations were entirely achievable goals.
