Global Peace Awards
The Global Peace Awards were first conferred in 2011 at the Global Peace Convention in Seoul, Korea, to honor government, civil society, and faith leaders and organizations whose exemplary efforts have substantially advanced the vision and mission of building a world of peace and shared prosperity.The Global Peace Awards underscore the importance of moral and innovative leadership, an ethic of public service, and a willingness to transcend boundaries of religion, ethnicity, culture, and nationality.The award categories have expanded to include:Legacy of Service and Peace, Interfaith and Spiritual Leadership, Freedom of Religion and Conscience, Strengthening Families, Outstanding Service, Innovative Scholarship, Moral and Innovative Leadership, Philanthropy and Corporate Citizenship, and a Culture of Peace. The manifold categories demonstrate the breadth and width of the work necessary to realize a world of peace so essential in our world today.

KH. Said Aqiel Siradj
Global Peace Awards 2014
Dr. KH. Said Aqiel Siradj, Executive Council Chairman of Pengurus Besar Nahdlatul Ulama, or ‘Awakening of Scholars,’ the largest Muslim organization in the world, was honored with the Interfaith Leadership Award. Dr. Siradj previously served on Indonesia’s National Commission for Human Rights and was the founder of the Said Aqil Centre in Egypt, a study center that focuses on developing Islamic discourse, particularly in the Arab world. Dr. Marsudi Syuhud, General Secretary of Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama and his wife recieved the award on behalf of Dr. Said.

Marlene Ocampos
Global Peace Awards 2014
The Outstanding Service Award was conferred on Hon. Marlene Ocampos, the current Governor of Alto Paraguay State in Paraguay. A native of Puerto Casado, Gov. Ocampos worked for nearly 20 years delivering health care and other emergency assistance to remote communities in the Chaco region during a succession of often unstable state administrations. In recent years she has led model service and community development initiatives for GPF in Puerto Casado. The only woman elected to a governorship in Paraguay, Gov. Ocampos continues to serve the inhabitants of Alto Paraguay by marshalling resources to deliver aid in areas affected by catastrophic flooding, as well as by providing other emergency assistance.

Mwangi S. Kimenyi
Global Peace Awards 2014
The Innovative Scholarship for Peace Award was conferred on Dr. Mwangi S. Kimenyi, a Senior Fellow and Director of the Africa Growth Initiative in the Global Economy and Development program of The Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. He is the Founding Executive Director of the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA), ranked the top policy institution in Africa and recognized as an international center of excellence. Dr. Kimenyi and his wife, Irene, collaborated with GPF Kenya’s Rift Valley Peace Initiative in conducting extensive research interviews with youths involved in transformation of identity-based conflict in the Molo-Kurosoi area following intensive post-election violence.

Isabelita M. Borres
Global Peace Awards 2014
Dr. Isabelita M. Borres, Regional Director of the Department of Education, Division of Bataan, in the Republic of the Philippines, was honored with the Leadership in Strengthening Families Award. Dr. Borres has been a pioneer in character education, equipping teachers and students with high ethical and family standards throughout schools in collaboration with GPF Philippines. Dr. Borres has won numerous awards as an educator and civic leader, which includes service as President of the Catholic Women’s League. She is also the author of two novels My Heart Desire (2002) and A Woman’s Heart (2000).

Global Peace Awards 2013
Global Peace Award for Promoting a Culture of PeaceMalaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak received the 2013 Global Peace Award for Promoting a Culture of Peace at the ceremony. The Prime Minister was chosen for his efforts in building cross-cultural relationships, for pioneering the Global Movement of Moderates and for his role in resolving the Bangsamoro conflict between the Philippine Government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
Prime Minister Najib said it was an honor to receive such award. “The purpose is to achieve peace not just during our time, but for all times,” he wrote in a Facebook posting. “Although the path to true peace is long and arduous, I am confident that we have made great strides towards promoting understanding and goodwill among our fellow men.”

Leah T. Marangu

Leadership in Strengthening Families AwardThe Leadership in Strengthening Families Award was presented to Professor Leah T. Marangu, Vice Chancellor of Africa Nazarene University, Kenya. The founding Chair of the Kenya National Character and Creativity Initiative (CCI) Council, Professor Marangu has provided exemplary leadership and expertise on the implementation and development of the CCI education initiative, a project of the Global Peace Foundation.Dr. Marangu is also the first Kenyan woman to serve at the helm of a university and has devoted her teaching career to research on women’s health, the role of women in food production, and science education for girls.

Guadencio Borbon Rosales

Outstanding Service AwardHis Eminence Cardinal Guadencio Borbon Rosales, the Archbishop of Manila.His Eminence Cardinal Guadencio Borbon Rosales, the Archbishop of Manila (2003-2011), was selected for the Outstanding Service Award. Cardinal Rosales is the founder of Pondo ng Pinoy, a poverty alleviation program which is considered as Rosales’ legacy to the Church and the poor. Cardinal Rosales is also Patron of Alllights Village Philippines, a GPF initiative which provides solar lights and other community development support to remote provinces and islands in the Philippines. Monsignor Jesus-Norriel Balin Bandojo accepted the award on behalf of Cardinal Rosales.

Lilian Samaniego
Global Peace Awards 2013
Good Governance AwardHon. Lilian Samaniego, a National Senator in the Republic of Paraguay, was honored with the Good Governance Award. She earned her Doctorate in Biochemistry from the National University of Asuncion. She joined the Colorado Party in 1982, the largest political party in Paraguay, and is currently the party’s president as well as president of the Central Commission of Women of the Colorado Party.Sen. Samaniego is credited with rebuilding the party after its defeat in the 2008 general elections based on a platform of transparency and good governance. Senator Samaniego was reelected for a third term in 2013.

Innovative Scholarship for Peace AwardDr. Oscar Alvarez Araya, former Ambassador of Costa Rica to the Republic of China and current Professor of Latin America International Policy at the University of Costa Rica was recognized with the Innovative Scholarship for Peace Award. Dr. Alverez has been the Coordinator of the Latin American Network of the World Movement for Democracy since 2008 and a Professor of International Relations at National University since 2006.Dr. Alvarez was a consultant for the Culture of Peace and Democracy Program of the University for Peace of the United Nations (1996-1998) and a consultant of the United Nations Development Programme. In recent years he taught World Religion, inviting guest speakers representing the world’s major faiths, promoting comparative studies, and focusing on their shared values and principles as a way to build a culture of peace.The Global Peace Foundation congratulates the award winners for their exemplary public service and upholding the vision of One Family under God.The 2014 Global Peace Awards will be conferred at the Global Peace Convention in Asunción, Paraguay at a time to be announced.

Interfaith Leadership AwardBishop Sunday Onuoha, Executive Director of the Nigeria Inter-Faith Action Association (NIFAA) was recognized with the Interfaith Leadership Award. NIFAA unites Christian and Muslim leaders in a multi-sector efforts to engage religious communities in the fight against poverty and disease.A key faith-based partner of the Nigerian government’s National Malaria Control Programme, NIFAA is training some 300,000 religious leaders through its “Faiths United for Health” campaign to spearhead the distribution of anti-malarial bed nets throughout the country. Bishop Sunday was also recognized for his exemplary national leadership in the GPF Nigeria One Family under God campaign.

Tan Sri Zaleha Ismail

Malaysian child welfare advocate Tan Sri Zaleha Ismail choked back tears as she accepted the first Global Peace Award for the Family. “I never expected to receive such an award,” she said. “I never thought I was doing anything remarkable. I have spent my life doing the things I believed I ought to do.”Her acceptance remarks came at the first annual Global Peace Awards, conferred in Seoul, Korea on November 30. The Global Peace Foundation (GPF), founded and chaired by Dr. Hyun Jin Moon, presented awards to outstanding leaders in in the areas of Service, Family, Faith, Governance, Culture, and Scholarship, reflecting the importance of multi-sector cooperation in sustainable peace building and economic development.

Nelson Marquezelli
Global Peace Awards 2011
The 2011 Governance Award was conferred on Hon. Senator Nelson Marquezelli, a distinguished five-term legislator in Brazil’s National Congress and current Attorney General of the Chamber of Deputies. Sen. Marquezelli was recognized for his leadership in congressional committees overseeing areas of the environment, public safety, economic development, and agrarian conflict. He was decorated with the Order of Military Merit in 1993.

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov

Hon. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, winner of the 2011 Culture Award, served as President of the Republic of Kalmykia in the Russian Federation from 1993 to 2010, and he has been the President of FIDE (the World Chess Federation), the world’s pre-eminent international chess organization, since 1995. Long an advocate of promoting chess in schools, he now proposes to use chess to bridge divisions between North and South Korea. He has been a generous supporter of Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Buddhist places of worship in Kalmykia and was honored with an Order of Friendship by the Decree of Russian President Boris Yeltsin in April 1997.

Jin Shin
Global Peace Awards 2011
Professor Jin Shin, President of the Institute for Peace Affairs and Chair of the Department of Political Science & Diplomacy at Chungnam National University in Daejon, Korea, was recognized with the Scholarship Award. Dr. Shin has spent over 20 years as a researcher and educator on issues relating to the peaceful unification of North and South Korea. The Institute for Peace Affairs in partnership with the Korean Ministry of Unification is now organizing a unification education training program for teachers throughout Korea.

Monk Beopta (Venerable Popta)

Buddhist monk Bubta was named the 2011 Faith Award winner. Bupta is chairman of One Korea Buddhist Movement and founder of the Korea Peace Unification Buddhism Association. Since his first visit to North Korea in 1989, Bubta has visited the North some 40 times. Through his many business ventures, relief projects, and cultural exchanges he has advanced the foundation for the unification on the Korean peninsula.

Goris Mustaqim

GPF’s Service Award was presented to Indonesian entrepreneur Goris Mustaqim, currently the director of the IT company PT Barapraja Indonesia. After graduating from the Bandung Institute of Technology, Goris turned down promising career opportunities to return to his hometown of Garut in West Java, where he founded the Asgar Muda Foundation in 2007 to develop business opportunities for youth in the region. Through his efforts to promote environmentally sustainable industry, agriculture, and tourism, Goris was selected as one of the British Council’s International Climate Champions and named by Bloomberg Business Week as one of Asia’s best young entrepreneurs in 2009.
